The Compassion of People We Don't Know: The Way a Person I Had Just Met Supported Me Land the Position That Altered My Path

During the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a low-cost journey to Europe with a travel partner. Since my companion was considering starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had planned a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a sizeable ten-floor structure on the UWS called International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, found a table, and started talking to people eating there.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I my profession was, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – close to the engineering faculty, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I ought to seek a position with them. I laughed it off, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, returning to the canteen that night. The engineering student walked over to me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off informed my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where everything seems achievable – she said: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his identity, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in so many ways. I would never have had the confidence or self-assurance to contact anyone at an elite institution and ask for a job. And, I had long dreamed to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that role at the university paved the way for a job in Zurich where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That benevolent individual redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
