European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
