2K Hires Apex Legends Producer to Boost Challenged Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the upcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Transition Comes After Lukewarm Reception

Brinkman steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the exit of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing early showing last autumn.

Recently, 2K president a key figure notified team members about this strategic move through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had indicated the necessity for a more defined game identity.

Ismailer expressed that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a refreshed vision, aiming to better meet community desires.

A Pattern of Strategic Hires

The news mirrors a similar move taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired an industry veteran from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the complete message from Ismailer's communication:

Hello Everyone—

I understand you all just completed your meeting - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a message, I stated the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative creators we have had the chance to work with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to persist.”

With your dedication and adaptability, particularly over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.

The player input from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was revealing. It affirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had improvements to make. It revealed the requirement for a more distinct identity.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the input to heart and reimagined the title with a revitalized vision - one that’s ready to deliver on its ambition to our fans.

Our confidence in Project ETHOS increases every day. To further the outstanding progress you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Director of 31st Union. After a period of conversations, Ben comes aboard us on next week.

Ben’s leadership and background in the competitive gaming field is extensive, having devoted the last 15 years developing and overseeing some of the most recognizable titles in gaming, such as the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.

Let’s together in welcoming Ben next week. We are all looking forward to persist seeing the development of Project ETHOS in the weeks to follow.

Background of the New Head

The appointee currently holds the role of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman previously was employed at Treyarch and Activision in various development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, prior to that, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Information and Concept

The upcoming game was announced in last year in conjunction with a public demo. Then, the developers portrayed the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative step forward on the genre."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the official summary explains. "Face the competition with unique powers, risks, and obstacles that change every session. Do you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively go big, gamble everything, and hope your group can secure victory? The choice is yours."

Project Ethos lacks an announced launch window or platforms, but players can look forward to further news as production progresses.
